I gathered up the feathers
And made myself some wings
And glued it all together
With tar and sticky things
And perched high in the tower
Readied so to fly
Amidst the general warnings
Not to rise too high
Not too near the sun
Which burns all it can get
Yet not to swoop too low to sea
Where even God gets wet
I leapt into the sky sublime
Daring to be free
Enchanted by my birds-eye view
All marvels did I see
Entered into ecstasy
I flew in foolish joy
Blissful in my innocence
Eagle Wonder Boy
I swept up high and higher still
Where everything is One
It didn’t seem to matter now
To reach towards the sun
But how so foolish could I be?
The heat was too extreme
Melted well my tarstuck wings
And woke me from my dream
I screamed out loud and wept
As feathers came apart
And tar was dripping through my mind
And fear sealed up my heart
Horrified I was
And no one heard my call
The Gods had not prepared my soul
For such a lonely fall
I plummeted forlorn
Jetted to the sea
And drowned in the coldest waves
And nothing left of me
The moral of this tale
If this you’d like to do
Don’t use tar or Sellotape
Use the superglue
